If you’ve ever ridden a bike, two things have happened

  1. You know you’ll never forget how.

  2. You’ve experienced the principles that drive leadership excellence.

Taking the Lead is NOT a Book About Cycling

It uses the bike riding experience to illustrate leadership principles and answer critical questions about leadership

  • What is the definition of a great leader?

  • How does leadership differ from management?

  • How is a successful leader’s communication style different?

  • How do I develop other leaders around me?

Taking the Lead will help you drive for excellence in whatever leadership role you fill in the marketplace, in your home, in your marriage or in the community.

Taking the Lead What Riding a Bike Can Teach You About Leadership eBook Damian Gerke

"Taking the Lead" is a wonderful book on leadership that is a must for the reference shelf of anyone doing leadership work or study. The creative approach of connecting leadership to bike riding for a fascinating backbone metaphor, provides a platform that supports innovative leadership perspectives and wisdom. I especially like the fact there is a pull quote on just about every page. Those pull quotes are quite powerful. For example, one of my favorites is from Drucker: “There is nothing as useless as doing efficiently what should not be done at all” and from Damian " “There is a huge difference between trying to succeed and trying not to fail” These wisdom nuggets are just my favorite samplings of the wonderful nuggets Damian treats his reader to. They make the book not only very readable, causing one to turn pages in delightful anticipation of the next one, but make his book very memorable. For context, I am a retired Lieutenant Colonel with 23 years experience and an OD consultant with over 30 years experience . In the Army I had to deliver leadership; in my current role I coach and train it. in that context I say this one of the best books on leadership I have had the pleasure of reading. I will keep it desk side for constant reference.

Taking the Lead What Riding a Bike Can Teach You About Leadership eBook Damian Gerke Reviews

Liked the fresh approach to the idea that we are all leaders at some point in life - whether leading our families, in our jobs, in our community. This book is easy to read and to the point with great bullet-point summaries at the end of the chapters.
Loved this book - it is a very thorough yet concise treatment of leadership, skillfully interwoven with apt biking analogies (helpful even if, like me, you are not a biker). This would be a great leadership intro book to give to young, up-and-coming Millennials especially. There are frequent echoes of the great Peter Drucker here - a sign that the principles espoused are solid.
This book is an easy read. Short chapters with bulletpoint summaries at the end of each to drive home the key points. Offers practical direction to all types of leaders (and we all lead in some capacity). Entertaining stories even you haven't ridden a bike since you were a kid.
I just finished “Taking the Lead” and am very glad I took the time to read it. Full disclosure, I knew the author when we were both in high school many years ago and remember very well what an excellent athlete he was back then. We reconnected through social media recently and when I learned he had written this book I ordered a copy right away. Even though I’m not in management, the lessons learned from his examples will serve me well as I do my best to guide my family through life’s challenges. His writing style is very direct and easy to digest, and the insights I gained will undoubtedly help me to become a more productive and effective leader in all areas of my life. Good work Damian! I look forward eagerly to your next book and wish you continued success.
